Hypnotherapy in Newcastle & Tea Gardens

Hypnotherapy for Insomnia in Newcastle

If you are tired all day and wide awake the moment your head hits the pillow, you are not alone, and you are not doing bedtime wrong. Sleep is not something the thinking mind can decide on, and the part that does decide is the part I work with.

Start with a free consultation. Tell me where you are up to, and I will tell you honestly whether I am the right person to help.

Brenda Faugere, clinical hypnotherapist in Lambton, Newcastle

Sleep work with me is one to one, in my rooms at Lambton or at Tea Gardens. Together we look at your sleep hygiene, what your mind starts doing at night, and at what it is holding on to, in a relaxed and focused state where the subconscious mind is more open to change.

Why trying harder to sleep keeps you awake

Sleep arrives when a part of you decides it is safe to stop keeping watch. Trying is a conscious act, and it signals the opposite, which is why the harder a person tries the further away it goes.

For a lot of the people I see, night is simply the first quiet hour of the day, so everything that had no room earlier turns up then. Your mind is not misbehaving. It is using the first gap it has been given.

None of that is a personal failure. It is simply how the mind works, and it is the reason we work at that level rather than just adding another rule about screens.

What hypnosis is, and what it is like

The question I am asked most on the phone

How it feels

A relaxed, focused state, a bit like being deeply absorbed in something. In that state the mind is more receptive to suggestions that fit with what you already want for yourself.

You stay in control

You remain fully aware throughout. You hear everything I say, you can talk to me, and you can bring yourself out of it whenever you like.

Where it is used

Hypnosis is used these days in dentistry, in medicine, in law enforcement, in professional sport and in education, alongside therapeutic work like mine.

What we do in your session

One to one, in my own rooms, and you get to feel the blissful state we are using

A bedside lamp and a glass of water beside a made bed, with morning light through the curtain

First

We talk first

What your nights actually look like, when it changed, what runs through your mind when you are lying there, and what you have already tried. I am listening for the pattern underneath what you tell me.

Then

Then the hypnosis

You settle back in the chair and I guide you into that relaxed, focused state. It is not sleep, though it is a close cousin of the way you feel just before it, and a lot of people find that reassuring on its own.

Last

Then we look at what comes next

What tends to start the night off badly, what you might do differently, and what we work on if you come again. You leave with something to use rather than only something to think about.

How many sessions this usually takes

Between one and four for most of the people I see for sleep, depending on what is keeping the mind busy. Where sleep is being disturbed by something physical, sleep apnoea or pain or a medication, your doctor is the right first call and I will tell you so at the consultation.

Your part in it

Hypnotherapy is not something that is done to you. You play an active part in it, and it takes determination and commitment on your behalf. When it goes well, we have achieved that together, and the part you played in it is a real one.

All you need is an open mind, to be able to follow simple instructions and want the change for yourself, not because someone else wants the change.

Often it is not only about the sleep

People come to me about one thing and we frequently find ourselves talking about anxiety, or stress, or grief, or a stretch of life that got very heavy, because these things rarely sit on their own.

I have worked in health and wellness for over thirty years and I work with the whole person rather than with one symptom in isolation. If there is something else going on for you, bring it with you and we will look at it together.

If what you have read here is not quite it, the wider work I do lists everything else I see people for, and there is a page on Hypnotherapy for Phobias in Newcastle as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as a sleep hypnosis recording?

It is not. A recording says the same thing to everybody. We work on what is keeping your particular mind busy at night, in the room, with me listening. It is a personalised approach.

How many sessions will I need?

Between one and four for most people I see for sleep. We talk about that at your consultation rather than committing you to a number up front.

I have been told I might have sleep apnoea. Can you still help?

See your doctor about that first, please. I work alongside your medical care rather than instead of it, and there are things hypnotherapy has no business trying to fix.

Can I do this while I am taking something to sleep?

Yes, and keep taking what your doctor has prescribed. Any change to medication is a conversation with your GP rather than with me.

Will I lose control or say something I would rather keep to myself?

You remain fully aware and in control the whole time. You hear everything, you can speak, and you can bring yourself out of it whenever you like.

What if I fall asleep in the session?

It happens, and it is no disaster. Tired people do drift, and I will bring you back up so we can finish the work.

Where are your rooms?

Suite 5, 115 Elder Street, Lambton NSW 2299, and I also see people at Tea Gardens.

Is hypnotherapy covered by Medicare?

No. Medicare doesn't cover hypnotherapy, and it can't be claimed on a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Whether your private health fund pays anything back depends on your fund and your extras cover, so it's worth checking with them before you book. If you'd like to talk it through first, book a free phone call with me.
