Hypnotherapy in Newcastle & Tea Gardens

Hypnotherapy for Phobias in Newcastle

If you know the fear does not match the thing you are afraid of, you are not alone, and knowing it has probably not helped one bit. The reaction comes from a part of the mind that does not deal in reasons, and that is the part I work with.

Start with a free consultation. Tell me where you are up to, and I will tell you honestly whether I am the right person to help.

Brenda Faugere, clinical hypnotherapist in Lambton, Newcastle

Phobia therapy with me is one to one, in my rooms at Lambton or at Tea Gardens. Together we look at the reaction itself and at where your mind learned it, in a relaxed and focused state where the subconscious mind is more open to change. Flying, driving, lifts, needles, public speaking, spiders and dogs are the ones I see most.

Why knowing it is irrational changes nothing

A phobia is a protection that was learned once, usually quickly, and often so long ago that the memory of learning it has gone. The part of the mind that stored it is not the part that reads statistics about aeroplanes.

So you can know the odds perfectly well and still feel your body go before you have had a thought about it. The two are not in conversation, and no amount of telling yourself off gets them talking.

None of that is a personal failure. It is simply how the mind works, and it is the reason we go to where the reaction is stored rather than argue with it.

What hypnosis is, and what it is like

The question I am asked most on the phone

How it feels

A relaxed, focused state, a bit like being deeply absorbed in something. In that state the mind is more receptive to suggestions that fit with what you already want for yourself.

You stay in control

You remain fully aware throughout. You hear everything I say, you can talk to me, and you can bring yourself out of it whenever you like.

Where it is used

Hypnosis is used these days in dentistry, in medicine, in law enforcement, in professional sport and in education, alongside therapeutic work like mine.

What we do in your session

One to one, in my own rooms, and you never have to face the thing here

An open door onto a sunlit verandah, seen from inside a quiet room

First

We talk first

What happens, when it started if you know, what you avoid because of it, when was the latest occurance and what it is costing you. You will not be asked to look at pictures of it or to face it in my rooms.

Then

Then the hypnosis

You settle back in the chair and I guide you into that relaxed, focused state, and we work with the reaction there, at a distance you can manage. You hear every word I say and you can stop whenever you want to.

Last

Then we look at what comes next

The situation you want to be able to handle, how to take it in steps, and what we work on when you come again. Confidently book the flight after the session rather than before it, is my usual advice.

How many sessions this usually takes

A single fear with nothing else attached often moves in two sessions. Where it sits inside broader anxiety it takes longer, and I would rather tell you that at your consultation than after you have paid for four sessions.

Your part in it

Hypnotherapy is not something that is done to you. You play an active part in it, and it takes determination and commitment on your behalf. When it goes well, we have achieved that together, and the part you played in it is a real one.

All you need is an open mind, to be able to follow simple instructions and want the change for yourself, not because someone else wants the change.

Often it is not only about the one fear

People come to me about one thing and we frequently find ourselves talking about sleep, or stress, or grief, or a stretch of life that got very heavy, because these things rarely sit on their own.

I have worked in health and wellness for over thirty years and I work with the whole person rather than with one symptom in isolation. If there is something else going on for you, bring it with you and we will look at it together.

There is a page on Weight Loss Hypnotherapy in Newcastle too, and what else sits under this has the rest of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will you make me face the thing I am afraid of?

Not in my rooms. We work with the reaction in the relaxed, controlled state first, and what you do afterwards is yours to take at your own pace.

How many sessions will I need?

One or two for a single fear with nothing else attached. Longer where it sits inside something broader, and we talk about that at your consultation.

My fear is embarrassing. Do I have to explain it?

You tell me what you want me to know. I have heard a great many of these and I promise you yours is not the strangest, nor would I think less of you if it were.

What if I have a flight booked next week?

Ring me and say so. I will tell you honestly whether there is enough time to be useful before you fly.

Will I lose control or say something I would rather keep to myself?

You remain fully aware and in control the whole time. You hear everything, you can speak, and you can bring yourself out of it whenever you like.

Does it work for children?

I do see young people, with a parent or guardian involved. Ring me and tell me the situation and we can work out whether it is the right time for them.

Where are your rooms?

Suite 5, 115 Elder Street, Lambton NSW 2299, and I also see people at Tea Gardens.

Is hypnotherapy covered by Medicare?

No. Medicare doesn't cover hypnotherapy, and it can't be claimed on a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Whether your private health fund pays anything back depends on your fund and your extras cover, so it's worth checking with them before you book. If you'd like to talk it through first, book a free phone call with me.
